Short profile

Schlebusch

The pedestrian zone on the Bergische Landstrasse in Schlebusch has the feel of a family-friendly promenade, with a large number of small boutiques, cafes and restaurants – a melting pot for young and old. Built in the Bergisch style with half-timbered houses and Wilhelminian facades, it is perfect for leisurely shopping.

Schlebusch is characterised by an exceptionally large number of small, high-quality and largely owner-run retail outlets offering expert advice.

A farmers’ market, much-loved and well-known in the region, takes place in the pedestrian zone on Thursdays and Saturdays. Often referred to as ‘the village’, Schlebusch is also known as an attractive residential and shopping location.

Opladen

Opladen is the largest district and the most important secondary centre of Leverkusen – a vibrant and urban residential location. It is a popular place for shopping and strolling, especially along the spacious pedestrian zone and its adjoining streets, Goethestraße and Bahnhofstraße, which offer everything needed for the weekly shop. Beyond the main shopping areas, side streets such as Birkenbergstraße, Altstadtstraße and the southern Kölner Straße invite visitors to explore further. Numerous owner-managed specialist shops with unique product ranges can be found here, some of which have formed the “Seitenstraßen Opladen” business association.

Opladen has also long been known as Leverkusen’s nightlife district. A wide selection of restaurants, bars and pubs around Opladener Platz, on Düsseldorfer Straße and in the Neustadt area make it a popular destination for an enjoyable evening out with friends.

Another highlight is Opladen’s well-stocked weekly market held every Thursday on the market square, as well as the fresh produce market every Saturday in the pedestrian zone.

A major development boost for the district is being provided by the Neue Bahnstadt Opladen (nbso). In parallel with the development of the western part of the nbso, the City of Leverkusen, in cooperation with Wirtschaftsförderung Leverkusen, is implementing numerous measures to further enhance the district.

Local Supply Centres

In addition to the main city centre in Wiesdorf and the district centres of Opladen and Schlebusch, which serve city-wide and regional demand for goods and services ranging from weekly to long-term needs. Leverkusen has 15 additional local supply centres across its 13 districts.

These centres ensure daily, close-to-home provision of foodstuffs and everyday goods as well as retail-related services. This includes, for example, cosmetics, medical and pharmaceutical products, cleaning and stationery supplies, magazines and even cut flowers. The relevant product categories are listed in the “Leverkusen Product Range List”.

One of WFL’s key objectives is to ensure a well-balanced retail and service offering in terms of both quantity and quality, thereby creating strong business conditions for local traders.
The foundation for retail development in the districts is provided by the City of Leverkusen’s Retail and Local Supply Concept.

City Leverkusen

City Leverkusen in the Wiesdorf district has been a popular and established shopping destination in the region for many years. Cafés, restaurants and selected retail shops line the pedestrian zone in Wiesdorf. Its centrepiece is the Rathaus-Galerie, opened in 2010, featuring more than 120 shops and housing the headquarters of the Leverkusen city administration.

The cityscape combines historic façades with inviting pedestrian walkways, open squares and covered shopping arcades such as the Rialto-BouLEVard and the Luminaden. Visitors can enjoy the full variety of a colourful shopping world. The wide range of gastronomic offerings is also a welcome option for employees of local companies, whether during lunch or after work.

All major product ranges and well-known brands are represented in the city centre. Carefully curated additions and expansions, for example in Pfarrer-Schmitz-Straße, further increase the diversity of the offer and enhance the attractiveness of Leverkusen as a shopping destination within the region. Thanks to its excellent accessibility and compact layout, City Leverkusen competes successfully with its larger neighbours, Cologne and Düsseldorf.

To ensure the city centre remains fit for the future, the City of Leverkusen has developed the Integrated Action Plan (InHK) Wiesdorf, which sets out a range of projects and measures for its continuous improvement.
